University Women’s Club of Buenos Aires
Friendship, service, and learning through the universal mind.
We are a diverse and highly motivated group of women of various ages, nationalities, and professions who enjoy stimulating conversation and challenges to the mind. We engage in service to promote education, the arts, civil rights, and each other. We are a self-governing organization whose purpose is to further cultural and educational interests among English-speaking women who have studied at an accredited university, college, or institution of higher learning. As we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the University Women’s Club of Buenos Aires, we pledge to consider the role of educated women in fostering our communities for the next hundred years, locally, nationally, and globally.
“After living 47 years in the US, joining the UWC fulfilled my need to continue using the English language. The UWC offers a broad spectrum of activities focused on learning and broadening our horizons, all done in a friendly atmosphere. The Club has offered me the opportunity to meet very talented women. It is easy to find friends among people with whom you share the UWC experience.”
Our Beginnings
Thirty-five women representing twenty-eight U.S. colleges and universities founded this group in May 1935. The organization was provisionally chartered as the Buenos Aires branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Three years later, the Federación Argentina de Mujeres Universitarias (FAMU) was officially chartered as a chapter of the International Federation of University Women. The small group of women who met together from 1930 to 1934 developed our mission, structure, and dedication to cultural advancement. In 1940, this AAUW branch reconstituted itself as the University Women’s Club of Buenos Aires and extended membership on an international basis.
UWC Today
Our membership now represents numerous nationalities from various continents. We sustain the founding principle of the advancement of education among our Members and the community at large. We also extend our support for the arts, civil rights, and underserved populations. We elect UWC’s volunteer officers are elected each November to guide us in our endeavors.
“It is an honor to serve as the UWC president during our 90th anniversary year. In some ways, it is astonishing that an organization such as this has grown and thrived for almost a century. And in some ways, it is completely understandable. Brilliant, educated, compassionate women committed to learning from each other, teaching each other, and intentionally reaching out to make new connections – this is what the University Women’s Club is all about and what makes us incredible.”
We encourage all Members, new and old, to participate actively in some or all aspects of UWC. There are always opportunities, as UWC is a dynamic mix of permanent and temporary residents. Active participation helps us to enrich not only ourselves, but also others.
Multiculturalism, the acceptance of diversity, and the practice of personal tolerance are part of UWC’s foundation. For ninety years, this mix of Member perspectives and stories has given UWC its unique blend of internationalism rooted in the culture of Argentina.
