University Women’s Club of Buenos Aires

Friendship and learning through the universal mind.

We are a diverse and highly motivated group of women of various ages and professions who enjoy stimulating conversation and challenges to the mind. We are a self-governing organization whose purpose is to further cultural and educational interests among English-speaking women who have studied at an accredited university, college, or institution of higher learning.

After living 47 years in the US, joining the UWC fulfilled my need to continue using the English language. The UWC offers a broad spectrum of activities focused on learning and broadening our horizons, all done in a friendly atmosphere. The Club has offered me the opportunity to meet very talented women. It is easy to find friends among people with whom you share the UWC experience.

Our Beginnings

Thirty-five women representing twenty-eight U.S. colleges and universities founded the Club in May 1935, with the small group of women who met together from 1930 to 1934 forming its nucleus.  The organization was provisionally chartered as the Buenos Aires branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Three years later, the Federación Argentina de Mujeres Universitarias (FAMU) was officially chartered as a chapter of the International Federation of University Women. In 1940, the AAUW branch was reconstituted as the University Women’s Club, and membership was extended on an international basis.

Our Club Today

Our membership now represents over 15 countries. We sustain this founding principle, as well as adopting one of contributing to the advancement of education among our Members and the community at large. The UWC’s volunteer officers are elected each November.

We encourage all Members, new and old, to participate actively in some or all aspects of our Club. There are always opportunities, as our Club is a dynamic mix of permanent and temporary residents. Active participation helps us not only to enrich ourselves, but each other as well.

Multiculturalism, the acceptance of diversity, and the practice of personal tolerance are part of the Club’s foundation. For over eighty years, this mix of Member perspectives and stories has given the Club its unique blend of internationalism rooted in the culture of Argentina.
