UWC Meets Teatro Colón
This group takes a guided look at the historical context of selected operas from the current season at the Teatro Colón and delves into a psychological analysis of the female characters as mother figures and as lovers, all illustrated with video performances. We also cover the topic of women in opera as singers and as performers. First, we present the topic through video performances with a presentation in Spanish, and then the group has a bilingual discussion in both English and Spanish.

The opera season at the Colón will open March 17th, yes, the same day of the first luncheon of the year. Opening night will present Verdi's "Nabucco". Elena Levin, our guide through the operatic world, has commitments that prevent her from having the Monday meeting before opening night. She needs to know if there will be sufficient audience to schedule the meeting for Monday March 23rd. Please let me know so everyone reserves the date on their calendar. - Mariel
The last meeting of 2019 of the UWC Meets Teatro Colón fans will be Monday December 16 at 3 PM. The topic will be Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann”. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffman, who is the protagonist of the story. The opera opens November 29th at the Teatro Colon.
UWC Meets Teatro Colón will meet on Monday November 4 at 3pm. The topic will be Gluck’s opera “Orfeo and Euridice”, premiered in 1760. It will open November 8 at the Teatro Colón. As usual Elena Levin will guide us through the experience.
UWC Meets Teatro Colón will meet next on Monday October 7th at 3 PM. The topic will be Donnizetti’s opera buffa “Don Pasquale”. It will open September 24th at the Teatro Colon. As always Elena Levín will guide us through the experience.
The next meeting wiil be July 8 at 3:00 at Mariel’s house where the opera "Ariadne auf Naxos" will be the topic of discussion.
The June meeting will take place at the usual location Monday, June 24th at 3 PM. Elena Levin, our guide through the operatic world, will discuss Puccini’s “Turandot”, the operatic offering of the Teatro Colón for the longest nights of the year.
Elena Levin, our guide through the operatic world, will share with us her insights into “A Streetcar Named Desired”, an opera inspired by the Tennessee Williams play of the same title with music composed by André Previn.
