The next operatic performance at the Teatro Colón will be May 7th, and the meeting to discuss the opera will take place at the usual location on Monday May 13th at 3pm. Elena Levin, our guide through the operatic world, will share with us her insights into “A Streetcar Named Desired”, an opera inspired by the Tennessee Williams play of the same title with music composed by André Previn.
UWC Meets Teatro Colón Meeting Notes
The opera “Streetcar Named Desire” with music by André Previn taken from the original play by Tennessee Williams was the opera the UWC enjoyed this month. Elena Levin was pleased with the Colon
rendition of the opera but there was some debate about whether it should have followed so closely the video we viewed on Monday in our group. Elena explained that in this opera, there are no grand arias and the first two acts appear rather calm (she mentioned that people have been known to walk out after the second act), but the third act is well worth waiting for. We were lucky to view the dynamic third act in its entirety. The acting as well as the singing was excellent but to me the music itself was the star.
The video we saw was the world premiere performance by the San Francisco Opera directed by André Previn with Renée Fleming in the lead role of Blanche DuBois.
