The first UWC Continuing Education Seminar of 2021 will occur on March 21st at 3pm. The speaker, Fabiana Martinez, will give us insight into the creative process of a multilingual writer. In her talk she will explain the literary techniques she employs to develop her short stories, and how language affects our perspectives not only of fiction, but of life. What is a US Latina and what roles does she play in the United States? Americans of Latin American descent have lived in the south west since before it was part of the United States. Yet, they have been considered second class citizens since the beginning of the nation. In this event, Gwendolyn Diaz-Ridgeway will explore phenomenon of the US Latina, focusing primarily on the work of the most famous US Latina author, Sandra Cisneros.

“Crosstalk between the virus, the animals, and homo sapiens”

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has upended the world as we know it. This coronavirus is a new infectious disease, and because of this, experts are scrambling to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible, but there are as yet many unknowns. Scientists, health care workers, public health officials and governments are trying to balance the minimization of high risk infections with economic needs without much data. In this talk, I will establish the knowns and unknowns about this virus, and then go on to look at the implications for personal health, health services, economic, social and political decision making as this pandemic unfolds.

Our speaker is a graduate of Birkbeck College, University of London, BSc Psychology, and the Shell Leadership course, Institute for Management Development (IMD) Switzerland.

To help more of you to become familiar with Zoom before our monthly UWC luncheon on next Wednesday April 29th (don’t forget to RSVP), we will have a Cont. Ed. session on using Zoom. Three of our members who have been using Zoom in their work and personal lives have generously volunteered to give tips and help all of us become quickly comfortable with this new tool.  Ann Noguer, Joanna Richardson, Gwendolyn Diaz-Ridgeway, and Masako Kano will discuss their experiences with Zoom, and help with any questions that the tutorials haven’t answered for you. This should make our first luncheon event run more smoothly, as you learn how to join, participate and leave a meeting. As you become more familiar with Zoom, you will maximize your enjoyment of the talks and activities that will be scheduled online. We would like to invite you to take part in an online Continuing Education seminar: “Making and Wearing Facemasks to protect from the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.” In this seminar, we will first briefly discuss the latest information on the advice of international health organization on wearing facemasks. Then we will discuss making our own homemade facemasks.

The first talk for the Continuing Education group will take place at Melodye Rooney's home, on March 19th, at 3pm. The talk will be given by UWC member Zelfa Silva on the topic of traveling to Antarctica, and is titled "Sharing Memories of Antarctica."

Myrta Lange will be speaking on "The Useful Tool of Mindfullness” Thursday September 26 at 3:00pm the home of Melodye Rooney in Belgrano.

Laura Masi will be giving a presentation about Yoga for Continuing Education on Thursday May 23 Christine Clarke.

Continuing Education will feature a talk by the Reverend Peter Clarke on the challenges that arise from translating a sacred text into a language which is not necessarily part of the religious, cultural, and historical context in which the divine message was originally embedded. The Hebrew Bible (Torah) is the case in point, and those who are interested in some background on the debate will find a New York Times article in the attachment.

Christine Clarke will be showing a DVD with an educational commentary on the Darwinian landscapes of Cape Horn and the Beagle Channel. Christine will fill us in on the voyage she and her husband Pedro took this summer by ship around the tip of the continent visiting various ports, climbing mountains, seeing sights and flying back to BA from Santiago, Chile.
