National Parks of Argentina: History and Current Challenges

Watch below Ana Martelli’s presentation on Argentina’s national parks

Thursday, May 27, 2021, from 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Speaker, Lic. Ana Martelli, Environmental Manager, National Park Service of Argentina

Argentina is the world’s 8th largest country, and it is also incredibly diverse. There are subtropical rainforests, desert landscapes, grasslands, wetlands, and the immense Patagonia, among many others spectacular sceneries. From north to south, there is a world’s worth of ecosystems contained within the borders of one country. Fortunately, at the turn of the 20th century, a movement began in Argentina to recognize and conserve its natural beauty and resources by creating national parks and reserves. From those early days, the National Park system of Argentina has evolved, and now has forty-nine (49) protected areas to oversee, each with a different conservation challenge.

In this talk, Lic. Ana Martelli will discuss the history of the National Park system, how it has changed over time, its responsibilities, current and future challenges. She will share details of some ongoing conservation programs, focusing on the central-eastern region of Argentina and the El Palmar National Park with which she currently works. She will also talk about how you as an Argentine citizen or resident can play a role in caring for the national treasures that exist in Argentina’s diverse and valuable ecosystems.
