Community Impact
The UWC embraces social responsibility and believes in utilizing its resources, including the will and expertise of its Members, to further not only their charitable interests, but also the welfare and interests of the broader community. The Club has created a forum for Members to share their interests through the newsletter, email exchanges, the Membership directory, and personal interaction.
Recent community impact initiatives have centered around supporting the young people of the Orquesta de Los Barrios, which seeks to promote the intellectual and artistic development of youth from under-resourced communities. The Orquesta de los Barrios comprises 18 young musicians from 18 to 22 years of age, who were selected by Maestro Néstor Tedesco from over 1,600 alumni of the Orquestas Infanto Juveniles program of the City of Buenos Aires. The UWC helps to raise funds for the orchestra by organizing benefit concerts by the young musicians and collecting donated instruments for them, as well as arranging sponsored scholarships for their musical training.

Master Class by violist Kate Hamilton, Orquesta de los Barrios “Artist in Residence”
Last year, Phyllis and Monica started giving conversation classes to Santiago and Victoria, the only two Orquesta de los Barrios musicians with a good level of English. Kathy Hall began teaching two musicians with a basic level of English but who were very eager to learn. That left quite a number of musicians who also wanted to start learning the language and for whom we still had no teacher. We published a message in Instagram and immediately three teachers volunteered.
Orquesta de los Barrios shares a virtual concert so we can appreciate how the young musicians have continued to study and practise throughout the lockdown. Continue reading more!

Zoom meeting with the musicians of the Orquesta de los Barrios and their Director, Nestor Tedesco.
Orquesta de los Barrios plays "Love of my LIfe" alongside Queen lead guitarist Brian May.
With the participation of Phyllis Barrantes. Elena Catena, Monica Plou and Jacqueline Valle (non-UWC member of the support group). Via zoom we were able to have a group chat with members of the orchestra. Each musician in turn told us of their experiences during the lockdown, how they are feeling, the difficulties they face (ranging from having to borrow a smartphone to join the zoom, not being able to find a quiet moment/spot to practise on their instrument, having to cohabit with a large family group in a confined space, isolating after a parent was hospitalized with coronavirus, day-to-day life with little means to manage on). Maestro Nestor Tedesco continues to put an abundance of time, effort and energy into his admirable commitment to the Orquesta de los Barrios. During these difficult times of physical distancing he has maintained close contact with all 18 members of the orchestra, mentoring them when they approach him digitally with their personal problems, encouraging them to practise at home, doing all he can to acquire for instance reeds and strings for their instruments -extremely difficult of course when shops are shut. He has also given them group classes (see screenshot) to motivate them so they maintain a feeling of belonging. Continue reading about this event!
In keeping with the time of the year the Orquesta de los Barrios will be performing a medley of Christmas Carols (Silent Night, We wish you a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells, Gloria) plus a medley of Argentine Rock (Cerati, Charly, Spinetta) and time allowing, some tango.
