Literary Masters: “Dear Life” by Alice Munro

Vivien leads us in discussing the literary aspects of the works we are reading, and we add our own opinions. You are invited to join us this month on Thursday, May 16th. We will be reading three more stories by Alice Munro from the same book “Dear Life”: “Haven”, “In Sight of the Lake”, and “Dear Life”. We hope you will decide to join us there. Write to uwcstudygroups@gmail.com to sign up or for more information.

Literary Masters Meeting Notes

Comments during the reading: “Munro cuts to the bone.” “Not much use for simile or metaphor.” “Memory and iden- tity are connected.” “The author views the world as she ages as well as the aging of the Canadian countryside where she lived most of her life.” “She sees the little things in life that are often missed but remind us of how it was back then.” “She gives us subtle clues about the time in which each story is written.” As we finished our study of “Dear Life” by Alice Munro we reacted to her short stories and discussed what we thought she meant by the title “Dear Life”? It might be a good idea to put her short stories on your reading list if you have not already read her works.
