For the Tuesday, June 18 UWC Monthly Luncheon we are pleased to be meeting at the Círculo de Gendarmería, Paraguay 970. Those who wish to participate on Zoom are also welcome.

Well-known journalist Michael Soltys will talk on the subject of “Waterloo Before and After ABBA — Why Waterloo is more than a battle or a song or a bridge.”

About the speaker, Michael Soltys;

Michael Soltys has worked in Argentine journalism for over four decades, at the Buenos Aires Herald newspaper from 1983 until its closure in 2017 and since then at the Buenos Aires Times, c/o Perfil. Born in Liverpool in 1950, he was educated at primary, secondary and university level in Cambridge but with frequent gap years mostly due to his father’s sabbaticals in then British East Africa, the Netherlands, the Sudan, Canada and Austria, ultimatelyobtaining an M.Litt in history. His only job prior to Argentine journalism was electoral research for the European Community (now European Union) in Hamburg between 1977 and 1979.

Abstract:

This talk will be given on an anniversary of the battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815), which will serve as a touchstone for more current events and trends. This battle was something of a watershed between processes of action and reaction in world history and it will be asked if we are not at a comparable turning-point in Argentina today. The pivotal role of Waterloo in William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair will also be used to explore whether today’s world is not a more extreme vanity fair between the party fragmentation caused by political egos and a technology promoting egocentricity. The talk will conclude by asking whether President Javier Milei more closely resembles Napoleon Bonaparte or the Duke of Wellington (or perhaps both) but the answer to that question cannot be anticipated ahead of knowing this country’s situation in mid-June.
