Carl Worker took up the role of Ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay in January 2020.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Carl attended primary school in Argentina (Escuela El Carmen near Saladillo) for five years during the 1960s when his father, a New Zealand agricultural scientist, worked at INTA Balcarce. He studied at Auckland and Oxford Universities after undertaking his secondary education at Winchester College, UK. Carl and his Argentine-born wife, Connie Aldao, a chef who worked for many years with Francis Mallmann, have two children, and he has two older children and two grandchildren.

He served previously as Ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay from 2001-06, and as Director of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Americas Division from 2006-08.

Also a Mandarin speaker, Carl Worker’s other diplomatic appointments have included Ambassador to China and Mongolia from 2009-15, Acting Head of Mission in Washington DC during Jun-Dec 2015, Ambassador for Counter Terrorism from 2016-17, Consul-General in Hong Kong during 1994-98 and 2017-19, and Deputy Head of Mission in Beijing from 1992-94.
