Book Club Meeting Notes

On Tuesday June 11 last, members of the UWC BOOK Club met at the home of Maria Inés Alvarez in Recoleta. The book chosen for June was “The Woman in Cabin 10” by Ruth Wade.

This is a suspense novel located on a small luxury liner, called boutique because of its size, designed to take tourists to see the Northern Lights in Norway on a tour lasting a week. The main character is invited to participate in the maiden voyage of this liner, in order to write a glow- ing report of the trip in a periodical where she works. In fact, the invitation had been issued to her boss but she had been requested to stand in for her at the last minute.

The mystery involves a murder, a cover-up and the difficulties encountered by the journalist to discover the identity of a person accidentally drowned at sea. Suspense builds up in a masterly fashion whilst the other guests are oblivious to the goings on behind the scenes. Certainly, this is a book to recommend to the other members of the club.

The next UWC Book Club takes place on August 13 next. The book selected for that meeting is “The Only Store” by Julian Barnes. The venue will be announced at the July luncheon and in the Bulletin.
