Abstract: There is a generalized idea that happiness is something to be attained individually – a personal choice, unrelated to public policies. However, this traditional view is changing and changing fast. Studies in the field of economics, psychology and public opinion show that even though happiness is subjective, it can be measured and related to both personal attributes and social trends. Through the World Values Surveys we can learn how subjective wellbeing has evolved over the last 35 years and analyze the factors that are correlated with happiness.

In the past, success has mostly been measured in terms of economic growth - GDP - alone. But the data shows that there are other more important factors to be considered. Happiness differs from country to country and over time for reasons that are identifiable and that in many cases can be influenced by public policies like health, education, family relationships, or freedom of expression.

Prof. Marita Carballo’s talk focuses on mapping world happiness, identifying correlated factors and showing how public policy can help generate the environment and the conditions to make citizens happier. A special focus will be put on Argentina and the Latam region. The impact of the pandemic on happiness is also addressed. Click here for a more detailed bio of the speaker.
