Below is the recording of the luncheon presentation:
For the August 15, 2023 UWC Monthly Luncheon we are pleased to be meeting at the Círculo de Gendarmería, Paraguay 970. Those who wish to participate on Zoom are also welcome.
Our invited speaker is Dr. Juan José Delaney. The subject of the talk will be “Borges and Irish Writing”.
Dr. Delaney’s CV is included here .
ABSTRACT
In Borges and Irish Writing Delaney conveys the range and depth of Borges’ creative reception of Irish Writing, including philosophy (Bishop George Berkeley) and theology (John Scottus Eriugena), the distinctive impact of Irish writers such as Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, Laurence Sterne, Bernard Shaw and William Butler Yeats, among others. Delaney states that this influence can be noticed not only in terms of style and technique but in plots and ideas as well.
Borges always praised intercultural relationships and their aesthetic possibilities. That is why he frequently appears more as a cerebral and subtle composer rather than a creative writer (a composer for whose works the Irish verbal music became a significant component). His attitude towards letters (and reality) reveals dominant aspects of his poetics: a vision nourished by the conjunction of diverse voices articulated, in the end, through the unique, lone voice of the human condition.
