French Conversation -- Cleopatra: Does Race Matter?

  • Zoom Video Conference Platform CABA Argentina (map)

French Conversation for Beginners and Fluent Speakers

French Conversation led by Barbara Grünenfelder is offered on the fourth Monday of each month. If you are a French speaker, come and enjoy the challenge and the fun.

The new Netflix series on Cleopatra has given rise to misgivings among the Egyptian public, many of whom object to the fact that their female Pharao (their queen or empress) is represented by an Afro-British actress, and therefore assumed to have been African, that is with a black skin. There is an Egyptian documentary which “sets things strait” in that Cleopatra, a Ptolemaic ruler, and therefore of Greco-mediterranean origin was neither white, nor black.

We are discussing this controversy in line with the topic of the June 2023 UWC Luncheon which also revolves around identity politics of sorts, or “how others see us."

If you wish to participate, please email Barbara Grünenfelder at uwc.frenchconversation@gmail.com in order to receive the Zoom link 24 hours prior to the event.
