The Myriad Manifestations of Dementia: A Neuropsychiatrist’s Perspective
Below is the recording of the presentation.
Julia Gwen Ridgeway-Diaz, M.D. M.S., is Staff Psychiatrist at The Menninger Clinic and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine, both in Houston, Tx.
Abstract: While Alzheimer's disease is the most common and well-known neurological disorder that leads to dementia, there are other causes of dementia that can look similar and easily be confused for Alzheimer’s disease. Distinguishing these conditions from Alzheimer’s disease and from psychiatric illness is important as the treatment, prognosis, and experience of the patient and his or her family can differ greatly. In this talk, we will explore some of my most interesting cases of both common and rare forms of non-Alzheimer’s dementia. Importantly, we will also discuss how these conditions differ from the cognitive changes that occur with normal aging. Using these cases, we will gain a greater understanding of the variety of causes of cognitive and behavioral changes; what the patient and family can do to improve prognosis and quality of life; and explore the benefits of obtaining a formal neuropsychiatric evaluation in cases where dementia is suspected.
