Joy Harjo, Poet Laureate of the United States
In addition to reading and discussing some of Joy Harjo’s poems, we will also hear her read as she plays the saxophone.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 9, 1951, Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation. Her poems are of a deep spiritual nature, where land, the people and animals that inhabit it, and the spirits of our ancestors move within the rhythms of her words. Both lyrical and socially engaged, her poems inspire and enlighten us.
